Khemjira The Series
Khemjira is your cursed boy, powerful shaman romance trope with Thai supernatural lore and reincarnation.
Khemjira, aka Khem, is a young man who can see ghosts. Khem was born into a family where boys die before the age of 21. But Khem’s mom wanted to keep her son safe, so she named him Khemjira, a girl’s name meaning “safe forever.”
Despite the name, Khem does not escape his fate. The amulet he has had his whole life starts to lose power, and the ghosts become more aggressive towards him.
Jettana, Khem’s friend, takes pity on him and takes him to meet Pharan, a powerful shaman, who may have the ability to help Khem.
Pharan and Khem’s relationship is mostly slowburn. If you love a slow-paced show with most focus being on the supernatural storyline, this is the show for you.
The show covers a lot of Thai lore, and the production did a good job showcasing this part of Thai history, even through the spells and incantations.
And the villain Ramphueng? Chef’s kiss. She’s deliciously evil with motivations so understandable that I almost caught myself rooting for her. Almost.
But here’s the tea: the main character, Khem, is about as interesting as plain rice. This boy has ghost-seeing powers and magical potential, but spends the entire series crying, begging for help, and being the ultimate damsel in distress. I hate this trope the most.
The REAL stars are Jet and Chan, the second couple who absolutely stole the show. These two have chemistry so electric you’d think they invented the “gay for you” trope. Jet’s got charisma for days and could probably seduce a brick wall, while Chan’s quiet strength balances him perfectly. I would rewatch Khemjira just for these two.
The cast did not disappoint in the looks department. Everyone is serving looks, especially my fav, Pharan (Keng).
My overall rating for Khemjira is 8.5/10.
Domundi and Mandee did a good job in production. The soundtracks are amazing, and I will be adding them to my OST playlist. The plot is quite interesting and honestly a breath of fresh air from the usual.
